Medication in Possession

Ripon House is delighted to be one of seven Approved Premises around the country undertaking a pilot project organised by the Ministry of Justice. This project allows residents to have responsibility for their own medication whilst at the hostel. It is fully supported by the hostel GP.

People living in the community and many prisoners are already responsible for their own medication—we believe that taking medication off residents whilst they are at the hostel fails to prepare them for move on. Many residents have complex medical needs and it is important that they take responsibility for their own health needs as soon as possible.

The pilot scheme will last between 6-9 months and if successful will be rolled out to all Approved Premises in England and Wales.

In order to maintain the security of any medications Ripon House has equipped every resident bedroom with a combination safe — two safes in double rooms.

While most residents will have control of all their medication, there will be some exceptions. Medication that the Doctor feels is dangerous will still have to be kept in the office. Residents who have recently self harmed will also be required to keep their medication in the office.
