New Skills for the Future
Over the past few months Ripon House has worked closely with the Leeds College of Building to secure access to a variety of courses for our residents. These have included painting & decorating, joinery, electrical maintenance and plumbing.
Unusual types of courses for women some may think but our residents have been quite enthusiastic about undertaking them.
For some reason we find that often women have limited access to such courses but both Leeds College of Building and Ripon House recognise that these skills are important for our residents, especially as they are to move into their own accommodation in the community. No doubt wanting to decorate their flat in their own style.
These skills will also help them to undertake basic home maintenance.
“I couldn’t hang wallpaper to save my life” said one resident, “but now I feel more confident in giving it a go when I get my own flat. I wish I could have done something like this years ago.”
Some residents have been interested in taking these courses with a view to finding employment in these fields.
Not only do these courses give residents skills but there is a great sense of achievement— another skill they have learnt and can use in the future.
